May River Band Program
May River High School has one of the most comprehensive band programs in Beaufort County, South Carolina. With eighty students participating in marching band and concert band. The May River Symphonic Band performed at the 2019 SCBDA Concert Performance Assessment, in Class V, and received a SUPERIOR WITH DISTINCTION. The band also invited to perform at the 2019 SCBDA State Concert Festival.
In 2018, the marching performed at the Lowcountry Invitational and placed second in Class AAA. In 2018, the marching band placed 4th overall in Lower State, becoming a Class 3A State Finalist. In 2018, the marching band placed 7th overall in the State Finals. In 2019, the marching band was awarded the OUTSTANDING PERFORMANCE AWARD. In 2019, the Mrs. Lisa Sulka, the Mayor of Bluffton, awarded the band the TOWN AWARD. The band also received a day in their honor.
May River High School Band Boosters
May River High School Band Boosters is the philanthropic arm of the School’s music education program.
The purpose of the May River High School Band Boosters is to raise money and coordinate parent/volunteer activities for the support of the band program and director at May River High School. The May River High School Band Boosters is empowered to address the needs and actions of the band program at May River High School. The vision for the May River High School Band Boosters is to see successful outcomes for all students. The May River High School Band Boosters will operate strictly for charitable purposes within the meaning of Section 501(c)(3) of the US Internal Revenue Code.
School and Community
Bluffton is a Lowcountry town in Beaufort County, South Carolina, United States. It is primarily located around U.S. Route 278, between Hilton Head Island and Interstate 95. The town’s original one square mile area, now known as Old Town, is situated on a bluff along the May River. It is the fastest growing municipality in South Carolina with a population over 2,500, Bluffton is the fifth largest municipality in South Carolina by land area. The town is a primary city within the Hilton Head Island-Bluffton-Beaufort, SC Metropolitan Statistical Area.
May River High School opened in the fall of 2016 with approximately 950 students enrolled, grades 9-12.
The May River High School Band program is now currently in its 4th year of existence, and in its first season under band director Deborah Hamner.
