Letter to May River Students and Parents from Mr. Carbone
The May River High School Band program is now currently in its 3rd year of existence, and in its second season under band director Mr. David Carbone.
Mr. David Carbone has over 30 years of experience in music education and the marching arts as a performer, conductor, educator, arranger,and adjudicator, including a 25 year career as a band director and music educator at the high school and collegiate levels in Florida, Ohio, Texas, and South Carolina.
At the start of his career in Florida, Mr. Carbone’s marching ensembles earned Division I “Superior” ratings every year (8 consecutive) at FBA District contest, while his concert ensembles earned straight superior ratings on stage 6 years consecutively. While in Ohio and Texas, his marching ensembles advanced to Bands of America (BOA) Regional and Super Regional Championship Finals competitions fourteen times, the Grand National Semi-Finals in five consecutive seasons, and have won two BOA Grand National Class Championships – one each in Class A and AA. The Bellbrook High School indoor percussion ensemble, directed and arranged by Mr. Carbone, earned the WGI Bronze Medal in the Scholastic Open division at the Winterguard International world percussion championships. As Band Director at James Martin High School (6A high school in Texas), Mr. Carbone’s concert ensembles earned the coveted UIL “Sweepstakes”Award each and every year (8 consecutive), while earning an invitation to perform at Carneige Hall in 2016.
Mr. Carbone is currently Director of Bands at May River High School in Bluffton, SC where he took over a new band program of just 26 students in the summer of 2017 and in two short years has grown the program to approximately 120 students. In 2018, the May River HS “Silver Sound” placed 4th at the SCBDA Lowerstate Marching Band Championships and placed 7th at the SCBDA Class 3A State Marching Band Championships. The May River HS Wind Symphony has earned SUPERIOR ratings at Concert Performance Assessment both years (2018, 2019) under Mr. Carbone’s baton, including a SUPERIOR with DISTINCTION in 2019, which was immediately followed by an invitation to perform at the 2019 SCBDA State Concert Festival. In the spring of 2019, the May River HS Band program was awarded the SCBDA Outstanding Performance Award (OPA), the highest accolade that can be awarded a band program in the state of South Carolina – recognizing band programs that have established excellence in marching band and concert band, as well as individual student musical achievements in All-Region/State auditions and Solo / Ensemble. This is the first ever OPA earned by a Beaufort County high school band program. The award was established 30 years ago in 1990.
Mr. Carbone holds a Masters Degree in Wind Band Conducting from the University of South Florida, as well as a Bachelors Degree in MusicEducation from the University of Miami (FL). His collegiate experience includes graduate teaching assistantships at the University of South Florida as well as an appointment as visiting professor and interim Associate Director of Bands at the University of Texas at Arlington,where he served as director of the UTA Maverick Marching Band, and conductor of the University Concert Band and Symphonic Band. In the spring of 2017, Mr. Carbone was named Associate Conductor of the OLLI Low Country Concert Band at the University of South Carolina Beaufort. Mr.Carbone maintains an extremely active schedule as an adjudicator for Music For All, Bands of America, Winterguard International, and Drum Corps International as well as several local and regional circuits nation-wide. He also is in demand as a band clinician, program coordinator, and guest conductor nationwide. He is an educational artist with Innovative Percussion, Inc., as well as a VIP Educator with Conn Selmer, Inc. Mr. Carbone resides in Bluffton, South Carolina with his beautiful wife Carrie, son Beckett, daughter Jordan and two furry children – his dogs Grainger, and Daisy.
